Discrimination occurs when an individual is treated differently than others on the basis of a protected class or characteristic. 

The offices within the Institutional Equity, Access & Community division are responsible for ensuring compliance with the non-discrimination policies of Stanford University. Our offices can assist with clarifying issues and identifying the appropriate resources and procedures to help students, staff, faculty, and members of the community resolve any concerns regarding unfair treatment.

What Are Examples of Discrimination?

  • Refusing to hire an applicant or to promote an employee because of their race.
  • Assigning a student a low grade based on the student’s gender
  • Refusing to provide an employee with reasonable accommodations for the employee’s religious beliefs without any basis
  • Persistent verbal harassment of an employee based on the employee’s national origin
  • Requiring a transgender student or employee to use a restroom not consistent with their gender identity or presentation

What is Not Considered Discrimination?

  • Disagreements about supervisory techniques and management styles
  • A supervisor's denial of a request to telecommute as an accommodation where the position requires in-person presence
  • A faculty member's denial of a student's request to be exempt from attendance requirements on a basis consistent with other similarly situated students.
