Sexual assault, violence in any form, and stalking are crimes. The University encourages an individual who has been the victim of a crime to report the incident to the police department in the jurisdiction where the crime occurred. The University will assist victims in reporting crimes to the local law enforcement agency if the victim chooses to report the matter to the police. However, a person who has been the victim of a crime is not obligated to report to the police and may choose not to leave a report with the police.
If you have been sexually assaulted and are uncertain about whether you want to report the crime for purposes of criminal prosecution, you may discuss the process and ask questions over the phone with a SUDPS police officer without providing personally identifying information about yourself or the alleged perpetrator.

If you are injured or want immediate medical treatment, go directly to Vaden Health Center or the nearest hospital emergency room. Individuals who have experienced any form of sexual or relationship violence are encouraged but not required to have a medical-legal exam, called a SART exam, performed by a trained medical professional as soon as possible (i.e., within 72 hours) after the assault. In Santa Clara County, medical-legal exams are performed at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC) in San Jose.
